I first heard about home birth when I was a child and my Aunt Nikki was planning to have her second baby at home.  It was 1977 and my aunt's plan was radical - even as a 10 year old child I knew this.  I loved my aunt and thought she was one of the most beautiful, graceful, poised, and womanly women I had ever known.  Everything she did mesmerized me, and so I became enchanted with home birth at a very early age...

With my hospital-born child, I was told at my first prenatal, "Your pelvis is definitely on the small side.  It would be ideal if you didn't have a baby any bigger than 6 or 7 pounds."
With my first homebirthed child, I was told at my first prenatal, "Your pelvis is just fine. There's nothing wrong with your body..."

"I had three children in hospital before I had my fourth baby at home. The difference was phenomenal to me. All my pregnancies were uncomplicated, so the risks for any of them were low. But I wasn't even aware of the possibility of having a baby at home with a midwife the first two pregnancies - in 1974 & 1978. By 1981, when my third baby was due, I met a new friend who was planning a home birth..."
